When Ignorance is Deadly

The Ouija Board

Since Halloween is rapidly approaching, I think that it's a good idea to have a refresher course in history.

What history am I referring to?

The history of a young man named Roland Doe (a pseudonym) who grew up in Mt. Rainier, Washington in the late 1940s.

What's so significant about Doe? He was a young teenager who acquired a fascination for the Ouija Board. After his grandmother died, Doe attempted to contact her via the occult device.

Doe evidently made contact with the spiritual realm. Soon after he began using the Ouija Board he began speaking in strange tongues such as Hebrew, even though he never learned to speak that language.

The furniture in his home also began to rearrange itself. And Doe even acquired the strange habit of speaking in deep male voices that were physically impossible for his young vocal chords.

Doe's behavior eventually became so violent and erratic that he was committed to a psychiatric hospital in St. Louis where he had to be chained to a bed.

But Doe's story had a happy ending. He was diagnosed as demon-possessed by two Catholic priests who delivered Doe of his unholy spirit via exorcism.

You probably never heard of Roland Doe. But you probably remember The Exorcist, the classic 1973 horror film that was based upon Doe's story. Though the film changed some of the circumstances involving Doe's predicament, it told the true story of a young person who became possessed by a powerful demonic spirit.

What does this have to do with Halloween? Many folks who are woefully ignorant concerning the Bible and God's laws will purchase Ouija Boards and attempt to contact the spiritual realm. In fact, you can buy these things in many department stores and even online.

God's law specifically forbids us from attempting to contact the spiritual realm. The Lord spoke to Moses and said this: "I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people." (Leviticus 20:6)

Though many folks believe that law only applied to the ancient Israelites, it applies to everyone because it's part of God's universal law that we are all held accountable to.

Certainly, not everyone who dabbles with the Ouija Board becomes demon possessed. But everyone who uses that occult device opens themselves up to demonic deception and oppression.

And they also come under a curse for violating God's law that forbids us from attempting to contact the spiritual realm via the Ouija Board, hallucinogenic drugs, magic, witchcraft, hypnosis and Eastern religions and their occult practices such as Transcendental Meditation.

Tragically, few people today believe in spirit possession. Even many professing Christians no longer believe in it despite the fact that their Lord Jesus Christ cast out many demons during his ministry in ancient Israel. If demon possession existed during the time of Christ, then why wouldn't it exist today?

In fact, demon possession still exists. And it remains a very serious problem. When you consider that we live in a world that increasingly rejects God and mocks His laws and commandments, it's not surprising that many folks see no danger in practicing the occult.

But there's great danger in it. Before you get involved with something as detestable as the Ouija Board, think about Roland Doe.

And then think about the horror film The Exorcist. That movie wasn't based upon fantasy--it was based upon a true event.
