Bad Decisions and Ruined Lives

Patricia Columbo: Then
Patricia Columbo: Now

It's been almost 40 years since Patricia Columbo lived outside the walls of a prison. On May 4, 1976, she and her fiance, a man named Frank Deluca, murdered her parents Frank and Mary along with her brother Michael in their home in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. And on May 15, 1976, they were arrested for the brutal crimes.

Why did they do it? Columbo's parents, while not ultra-rich, had ample financial resources that Deluca believed Patricia could inherit if her parents died. In order to make that happen, they cooked up a scheme to murder Patricia's parents and make it look like a mob hit. Why did they murder Patricia's 13-year-old brother? To cut him out of the inheritance.

Patricia was only 20 years-old at the time of the murders. Her fiance was much older at 37. How did they meet? Patricia worked as a waitress in a restaurant near a Walgreens Pharmacy that Deluca managed. When Deluca visited the restaurant, he became physically-attracted to the then 16-year-old waitress and he seduced her.

At that time, Deluca was a married man with five children. He also liked sex and he enjoyed seducing impressionable young girls such as Columbo to satisfy his gargantuan libido. Evidently, Deluca's wife was aware of her husband's philandering and she threatened to divorce him unless he stopped cheating on her. When she discovered that her husband was having an affair with Patricia, she kicked him out of the house and filed for a divorce.

That's when Deluca proposed marriage to Patricia. Patricia's father, an overly protective parent with an Italian temper, hated Deluca because Deluca was a married man whom he knew wasn't in love with his daughter and was merely using her for sex. In fact, he confronted Deluca on one occassion with a shotgun and threatened to kill him before he shammed the gun into Deluca's mouth, shattering some of his teeth.

Why did Deluca propose marriage to the much younger Columbo? It's not hard to figure out. Deluca was faced with the prospect of paying child support and alimony for his five kids and soon to be ex-wife. That was a frightening scenario for someone who didn't have a lot of money. And so, marriage to Patricia and the murder of her parents became Deluca's solution to try and get his hands on the Columbo inheritance.

Fortunately, for Patricia, they didn't get away with it or she would've undoubtedly suffered the same fate that Drew Peterson's third and fourth wives (Kathleen Savio, Stacey Peterson) suffered. Deluca would've killed her and then taken the inheritance money. That's why he wanted to marry her.

Patricia herself wasn't an angel. Though intelligent, she was rebellious and she caused her parents a lot of grief. She likely saw Deluca as a ticket to her freedom from strict, domineering parents. And she willingly went along with Deluca's murderous plans. What led to her arrest? Besides the forensic evidence that tied her and Deluca to the crimes, she showed practically no remorse for her family's fate during interviews with the police following her arrest on May 15, 1976. And she's been behind bars ever since then.

What's the point of all this? I wrote to Patricia and sent her some of our website and weblog material. She responded with a kind and thoughtful letter, explaining that she had accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior while in prison. Here's some of what she wrote: "I am a born-again Christian and I am very honored to be one of four (women) on our prison praise and worship team that ministers to these women on the maximum security unit and our favorite; the new arrivals to the prison. It is any opportunity to make contact with the women when they are scared and broken."

Certainly, there are some folks who still believe to this day that Columbo's nothing but a con artist who'll say anything to fool people. One of those people is Lake County, Ill. Undersheriff Ray Rose who was Elk Grove's Deputy Chief of Police in 1976 when Columbo and Deluca committed the murders. Rose was one of the first investigators to arrive at the horrific crime scene and it's still etched in his mind.

Rose also serves on a 12-member Illinois Prisoner Review Board that is tasked every four years with determining whether Columbo should be granted parole. In Rose's opinion, that should never happen: "When you see people who've been murdered, what makes this so grisly is that it's an entire family. When you think about that … you can't forget. It's like we're speaking on behalf of the family because they're not here to talk for themselves."
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-03-02/news/ct-x-n-columbo-parole-20110302_1_frank-columbo-patricia-columbo-mary-columbo

I can understand where Rose is coming from. When you see the bodies of three human beings who were mutilated like animals, you never forget that. It haunts you forever. And it will haunt Rose until he takes his final breath. And as long as he's able to, he'll recommend that Columbo never be allowed to go free.

I believe that Columbo should be paroled. She's not the same person she was in 1976. She's changed. In 1976, she was a gullible and rebellious young lady who was charmed by a despicable person who used her--first for sex and then for murder. She's paid dearly for that. She made a terrible decision that ruined her life and destroyed her family. And I think she'll be the first to admit that.

And I think that there are people who are more deserving of her prison cell these days than her. And so, I think she needs to be allowed to live the remainder of her life outside of those prison walls in Lincoln, Illinois.

Concerning forgiveness, for everyone--even a murderer--who comes to Christ in repentance and truly confesses their sins in contriteness, God says this: "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." (Hebrews 8:12)

  1. lmao I can't believe you think she should be paroled. I don't care if Jesus Christ came down from above himself and asked for her to be let go, what she did was HORRIBLE. She is a sociopath who is continuing to use her sociopathic traits to fool people like you into thinking she is a changed person. I think you are diminishing her responsibility from the beginning implying that she was some kind of victim of Frank Deluca. Hardly. She should rot in jail and be happy that she has been given the privilege of living her life, despite being locked up, an option she took away from her family long ago. There is no reason that a person sentenced to over 1000 years should even be considered for parole, much less granted it. It's one thing to forgive someone for what they have done, because that is for the benefit of the one forgiving, but don't be so naive as to think that forgiving means forgetting and that she should be given any second chances. She was old enough to know the consequences when she stabbed her brother 90-some times, but arrogant enough to believe she would get away with it.

    1. Amen. This woman is exactly where she belongs. FOREVER. Doesn't the bible speak of obeying those who authority over u? Well laws are the guidelines we r supposed to live by. These laws have authority over us. Ms.Columbo disregarded these guidelines, thus she forfeited her right to live among the rest of us. She should thank our Holy Father that she was allowed to live on at all. And of course the possibility that she would kill again is high. If someone could kill their on BLOOD for money, then ours lives mean very little to someone like that.

    3. It is said she still won't discuss what happened in detail or take any responsibility for her part. That right there proves she hasn't changed. Any self proclaimed reborn Christian knows the truth will set you free.....

Sadly I am dealing with a sociapath my daughter who is the same age as when Patricia got arrested and She already stabbed her dad although not fatal I do worry cause she has all the same characteristics as her when she was young and did it. Except she is not greedy or money hungry and she depends on me her mother all the time for her survival and does not assert her independence and does not make friends other than social media and she chooses not to work but wants to stay stuck in looking at her phone without improvement of her life and burdening me and demanding my attention most of the time I never have time for myself or can't keep a relationship with a man without her dragging me down constantly with her relationship drama and disappointments of most things everyday. I fear she's pretty bad like this Patty Columbo character but thankfully not as much of a selfish mean spirited soul towards me. Thoughts comments welcome

    6. Ive been in prison it will break you!! No matter who u are these boys who run it aint cool and 1 smile a yr is about all your enjoyment. I dont think just cause you can you should. These people were her family and she may have been hell bent on pleasing her then man but she comes from a very loyal family and so she behaved in that extreme (being loyal is control and that is very deceiving its not warm love as much as fierce devotion) its clear staging the crime and drugs were involved. I know healing from this is never an option and death would have been more effective if parole is never an option. Really there is worse and its neen 40 yrs plus the lose of her entire family that is much heavier then death. Parole isnt pitty its fact the public is not at risk and thats the only reason to release her she can always come back to jail.....

    7. I agree with you, she should never get out. The person that thinks she has deserved the right to receive parole sounds like a fool, too many foolish people in the world

    8. She should never get out. So, all it takes it to fjnd Jesus and change over the years. We all change over the years. It does not mean that our horrible past actions can now allow someone like Patti to be released.

  3. You need to do a little more homework. You have painted a picture of an impressionable girl who was a victim. She was far from a victim & was actually the stronger personality of the duo. She was & probably still is a habitual liar & until very recently never even took responsibility for what she had done. I repeat.....your synopsis is all wrong. You sincerely need to do more research & write this again. BTW...she will never get out on parole unless she lives to be 100!!! And might I remind you that she stabbed her 13 year old brother 87 times with a pair of scissors. Nobody coerced her to do that. She made that evil decision all on her own!!!!

    1. Forgot to mention that for months before the murder she was offering sexual favors to men in in exchange for killing her parents. When she could not find anyone to actually do this for her she did it herself with her less than bright boyfriend DeLuca. The murders were her idea from the start & she did all the planning. She was NEVER the victim!!! And she has shown little remorse for it all until recently. NO,,,she needs to stay where she is & live out her life.....something that she took away from her 13 year old brother. The story you have written is well meaning but completely without merit. Your facts are wrong & twisted & you see good where there is none........

As far as "seeing good where there is none", I believe that even the worst people can repent. Remember the thief who was crucified next to Christ? (Luke 23:32-43)
Here's the website of another infamous murderer. http://www.aboundinglove.org/main/ Check it out and see if this guy sounds like the same guy he was when he did evil.

    4. I appreciate you using scripture, to let us know what the meaning of FORGIVENESS. But in your last remark you mentioned (Luke 23:32-43 ) But you forgot to mention that, the THEIF ,was not trying to escape punishment for his sin. Yes Jesus Christ forgave him. Because he said his self that he deserve his punishment, and he knew Jesus was a innocent man. A true repented person would not try to escape punishment. If Patricia Columbo was truly, sorry for what she did , she would pray to the Almighty God Jehovah , for forgiveness. Forget the parole board.

    5. You know after reading ur replies I had an epiphany. The scripture is inspiring, and yes, the most wicked sinner will be forgiven their sins upon repentance, but what does any of that have to do with granting Me. Columbia parole? I was taught to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. And as a grown woman I learned that accepting God into ur heart and soul is liberating for the SOUL. And no man (or prison) can chain ur soul. Therefore she should be elated to have found God and realize herself that she is free, regardless of the walls that confine her. I don't think that the rest of society should have to roll the dice with safety and well-being by paroling her. Just her parole requests indicates that maybe she is not sincere about being washed in the blood of the lamb, because she evidently does not feel free

  5. I am not a judge of this woman, Patricia Columbo. But killing anyone for MONEY is wrong. And if it Frank Deluca was the master mind behind the murder of her Family. She could STOPPED the whole thing from happening. She tried to get others to kill her Family.

  7. In fact, Patricia has confessed her role in the murders and takes full responsibility for her actions. She's confessed Christ as her Lord. Is she sincere? Only God knows. But if she is sincere, she has crossed over from death into eternal life. That's what grace is all about.

    3. @Kathy, I highly doubt you, and many imbeciles on here are actually really decent people like you claim to be. I Love,LOVE, LOVE, laughing at you horrible actors. Your posts seethe with so much anger, and hatred, and such obvious stupidity, you are a JOKE!!! Typical, uneducated, dumb, AMERI-CAN'T!!!! You should worry about the crazies out in your country. All of you claim you are such good "Christians," but you have no idea what the bible is, or what the preface even looks like. What is horrendous about you, is that you all play judge, jury, and executioner. I am sure this Patti girl may have done horrible things, but, I am sure of one thing, a sin, is a sin, and in your case take a look at your own shit, before acting that just because you have not committed a murder, your sins are so lenient in comparison to a sin like murder. How about wiping your own ass before judging people. In fact, clean all of your fellow ignorant asses along with yours. I am sure your sins have added up over the years, unless you live in a closet, I hardly doubt that. All you Americans compete with the dumb, and dumber routine. Who are you to judge anyone you dumb moron? Now you know why you Americans are hated all over this world. You criticize everyone, but yourselves. America would not be so great had it not been for intelligent immigrants who make up the majority of the educated people in your country. What is sad is how many natural born Americans who live in a country of opportunity, but happen to live check to check. LOL I am a Criminal Psychologist, and a devout Christian. I also am a strict when it comes to speaking with criminals, and know who is truly remorseful. I am not easily swayed. I am sure 40 years is enough, and her parents loved this woman enough, to have forgiven her. I highly doubt you would understand something like that. These anal detectives often are the same people who racial profile, and are often only police officers with no education, just a police academy backround, with only a promotion. I can tell you now, those who are educated with a college degree in Criminology, don't end up working obvious crime spree murder cases, unless they are after Serial Killers. These so called "detectives" got their station in life by being cops who pulled over one too many people, nothing more. They real Criminal detectives don't get obvious cases. They get ones where their IQ's are put to use. This case did not require much IQ. I can tell you that!! It is actual agents that get hard cases, and usually they have high IQ's, and know how to deal with criminals, and are taught the importance of cases, it is to make sure justice is brought forth for both sides. These idiots are still complaining about the crime scene, and how it haunts them. That is because they had never seen one in their lives. That part of Illinois is Suburbia, and is extremely crime free. COMMON SENSE!! I am surprised none of you can read between the lines. You can also tell the difference between intelligent detectives, and stupid cops, because cops are just vindictive, and detectives think before making stupid statements, and don't have the rush of playing authority. Cops like to act hard because they carry guns. They are worse than any Serial Killer. If it were up to police officers, they would make sure the POPE would be pulled over, and arrested. Anything to give them a raise, and a few points. These morons seem just as angry, and bitter as you, and they also seem like they are playing a game trying to keep someone behind prison.

In the past 3 months you have people killing innocent kids in a school, a jackass opening fire on people in a concert, and another idiot, opening fire on people in church, and so on! And you are worried about Patti Columbo? Seriously? You better pray she is released. You need all the room in prison for the kids you have been raising. Enjoy!!

"Every time party stabbed her brother, she was saying I hate you, I hate you. Why? He needed to be punished. He committed the great sin of being born."

The commenter thought Candice was speaking literally, not figuratively.

DeLuca had no passion for the boy (unless you count your other stupid comment that the boy came into the pharmacy to repeatedly stare at DeLuca. LOLOLOLO!!!!). And yes, with overkill, each stab, bludgeon, shot, is saying, "I hate you." This is Law Enforcement 101, and is further taught in criminal profiling. You can have your (mis-guided) opinions, but for God's sake, do some book learnin'.

    3. And yes, there is evidence that she stabbed her brother. Her fingerprints were on the scissors....BLOODY FINGERPRINTS. Deluca's fingerprints weren't found on the scissors, and more importantly, there was no GSR on the scissors, meaning DeLuca couldn't have stabbed the boy. Columbo had slice marks on her hands where the scissors slipped and cut her own hands. Her hair was found intermingled with her brother's blood on his dead body.

Oh, that's what you mean by, "There is no proof she stabbed her brother"?

    1. False. You should get your facts straight. Not everyone finds god in prison. I guarantee it.

  26. Thank you for your post Roy. I don't mind sharing that as a born again believer, I too believe in forgiveness but concur with the other posters' sentiments.

If Patty is truly born again, she should have peace enough to do God's Will IN prison, rather than seek freedom outside of jail.

A true testament to her repentance and new life would be sharing how the Lord "created in her a clean heart and renewed within her a right spirit...."

  28. Drew Peterson. Thats the name of the man who killed those women you named it was NOT Frank Deluca! How in the world did you mix up two totally different people and make those serious claims? Thats super crazy! Frank Deluca was only married once and never killed any wife of his! He went to jail after the murders. I recommend you correct this info...

  33. I feel compelled to not even put Mr. in front of your name, Weinberg . . . are you a Christian Jew? At any rate, one remark was right on board -- those that are punished on earth with receive redemption with death comes if they are truly remorseful and do fall into the Grace of God. . . however, they still have to face the consequences of their earthly actions. As of 2015, this monster had not confessed ever to the crime . . . so just in 2016, she came to religion and confessed? Just asking . . . you are just so off the mark on this . . . she may be a "model prisoner," but that is what she should stay . . . a prisoner.

  36. When did she come up with this sexual abuse stuff? First I heard of it. Casey Anthony got away with it despite no evidence, and Jody Arias escaped the death penalty with similar lies, so here's Patti trying the same b.s. after 40 years or so. There's no proof she was ever molested or that she was Delucca's victim, but even if she was, how does that justify shooting and stabbing her 13 year old brother 87 times. Lastly, she has never really shown any remorse for the very brutal killings, or acknowledged her premeditated planning and participation. I doubt she's even capable of doing so. Some people are truly evil.

  37. I grew up in Elk Grove, my mama went to high school with Patty Columbo. I wrote her myself about a year ago, I posted it here:

Briannesloan patty columbo my new favorite serial killer

I even sent her a postage stamp so she could reply, but she never wrote me back. Never, not one word. Not a single punctuation mark!

    XoXoXo! <3

I picked up this project again today and realized I don't need her~ what are the odds she would tell me the truth anyway? I am going to have to "fictionalize" it. I only wrote her the one time, but I am still a bit peeved. She's in prison, what else could she possibly have to do?

      THANKS!!! XoXoXo! <3

  38. Obviously you haven't seen the transcripts and heard all the evidence. It was not Frank who bashed her fathers head in with a vase, it was Patty. It wasn't Frank who slit her mothers throat after she was such hot to make sure she was dead...it was Patty. And it wasn't Frank who stabbed Michael in the back post-mortem 13 times while screaming 'I HATE YOU!' THAT was Patty. She is a narcissistic sociopath whose number one concern is Patty. Sociopaths are sociopath until they die.

  39. I have been in a controlled environment under extremely high blood pressure with all electrolytes off balanced. I remember being given the phenobarbital and Valium. I awoke five days later with no recollection of anything I had done. I have always been a kind, good hearted person. I was told that while under, I physically and emotionally hurt all people in my path. No memory at all. Now I have to question since Trish and I are blood related (yes I am a cheek), is she actually telling the truth? Time for people to realize that some people really don't remember!!!!

  42. To The Author of this article, Were you around in 1976 when these horrendous murders occured? In Illinois? I was, and I was 14 years of age. Everyone started to lock their doors before police arrested Columbo and Deluca. Ever talk with Ray Rose? I have, many times and believe you me, when you see a 13 year old boy stabbed over 90 TIMES with a crochet needle, I believe, and a mother who was using the facilities and couldn't even DIE with dignity, and YOU think that this murderer should be PAROLED? If Michael or his parents could talk, I bet they would say, "shame on you!" Michael Columbo's life was shortened and WHY? Patricia could have spared him! Patricia wanted her parents dead just as much as Deluca! Hogwash that she would have ended up like Stacy Peterson! SHE was the brains behind all of this. Not the dope, Deluca! Columbo was ANGRY that her father hit Deluca and knocked out some teeth. Hell, HE was angry as well. IF these 2 had gotten away with the murders, they likely would have spent the inheritance within a very short time and then one or the other would have spilled the beans about the entire murder and blame each other. Patricia Columbo STILL shows no remorse for the way her father was clobbered over and over on his head with a very heavy object, or how Michael died or even her mother, Mary. She will go straight to HELL when she dies and so will Deluca. Where both of them belong.

  43. I believe in justice, and there are people on death row who did much less than this woman. In fact, there are several death row inmates today who have compelling evidence disputing their guilt, yet they will probably be put to death. This woman took 3 lives,in a brutal heinous manner, one being a child. Her brother was merely a 13 year old boy, whom she stabbed mercilessly nearly 100 times. There are convicts who have been executed for putting a bullet in someone, one life, one bullet, hard to compare the crimes. 200 to 300 years should mean LIFE. The fact that it doesn't, is why so many support capital punishment. I'm an advocate against the death penalty, because I do believe in equal justice, and the politics of capital punishment can easily manipulate the system. In actuality, the worst of the worst are not sentenced to death, Patricia Columbo is a prime example. She should draw her last breath in prison, and even that should be considered a gift. How dare anyone suggest she deserves her freedom. She does not.

  47. In Brazil, there was a very famous case similar to Patricia Columbo, but the crime was committed in 2002. It's the case of the murder of the Richthofen couple, descendants of a rich and aristocratic German family. The crime was devised by daughter of them, the 19-year-old Suzane Von Richthofen, alongside her boyfriend Daniel Cravinhos and his brother, Cristian Cravinhos. The couple never approved of their daughter's dating Daniel, as the guy came from a poorer family, didn't work and used drugs. This made Suzane hate her parents to the point of planning to kill them, and also take possession of the Richthofen inheritance just for her. On October 31, 2002, the couple was violently beaten in their heads to death by iron rods while they slept, caught by surprise with no chance of defense. While Daniel killed his father-in-law, brother Cristian killed the mother, and Suzane stayed downstairs, just waiting for the massacre to end. What stood out the most was extreme Suzane's coldness. To try to simulate an alibi, she went with her boyfriend to a Motel, where they had sex, while their parents' corpses barely cooled in family's mansion. After that she simulated sadness and tears at the funeral, and just two days later she threw a party at the mansion's swimming pool with Daniel, to celebrate her "new life" without parents. Needless to say, the repercussion in Brazil was huge and still famous nowadays, cause Suzane's criminal perfil is unusual and unexpected. A pretty teenager girl with sweet face, that speaked three idiomes, and born in a millionary family. In a poor country like Brazil she had a privileged life that any Brazilian girl dream of, studing in a law university paided by daddy and always getting of her parents monthly allowances of two minimum wages. And then she simply do this brutality.
Two very similar cases of beautiful teen girls that when entered adolescence became rebels and chose awful boyfriends, destroying the life of the whole family.
Like Patty , Suzane also has a younger brother, Andreas, whom she did not kill, but who was still the biggest victim of this crime. He was just a 15 years old boy, and in one night, he lost his father, mother, sister and friend Daniel. For almost 20 years he has struggled to live under the shadow of the Richthofen surname.
To me the psychopathy is the only explanation to girls so cruel and cold like Patricia and Suzane.

  48. Psychopaths are very, very convincing. More than a few of them are religious leaders who can quote scripture. Perhaps if you had been on the receiving end of evil people like that, you wouldn't be so quick to say she should be released. She stabbed her 13 year-old brother almost 100 times with a pair of scissors. She slit her mother's throat. She is where she belongs. No, I take that back. She should be in a grave.
