The Big Bad Russian Bear

Russian oil pipeline routes

For those who are willing to believe that the United States has the power to punish Russia economically for the Bear's military excursion into Crimea, they'd better think again.

If the U.S. tries to slap economic sanctions against the Bear, they'd probably have a very minimal effect. That's because the Russians supply a significant amount of coal, oil and natural gas to many nations in Europe and the Middle East.

Those nations depend upon Russia for their energy and they certainly aren't going to join the U.S. in an attempt to strangle the Bear economically. Because those nations remember what Russian President Vladimir Putin did to the Ukraine back in 2006 when he cut off that nation's natural gas after the Ukrainians complained about the price Putin was charging them.

Putin cut off Ukraine's gas supply in the middle of the winter, plunging that nation into a deep, deep freeze. And he has the power to cut off the energy to any nation that joins the U.S. in attempting to enforce economic sanctions against Russia.

When he was asked about America's threat to impose sanctions against Russia, Kremlin economic spokesman Sergei Glazyev said bluntly: "An attempt to announce sanctions would end in a crash for the financial system of the United States, which would cause the end of the domination of the United States in the global financial system."

Glazyev stated that Russian banks and businesses would refuse to pay back loans to American financial institutions, and Russia would stop using American dollars for international transactions and instead create its own payment system using her "wonderful trade and economic relations with our partners in the East and South."

And then Glazyev warned that if the European Union tries to impose economic sanctions against Russia, the Bear "could halt gas supplies", clearly meaning that Putin might decide to shut down the oil flow and natural gas to Europe.

The Russians not only have the advantage in the energy weapon they can use against Europe and the U.S., they now have China's backing. And China has become an economic powerhouse.

And when Glazyev speaks about Russia's wonderful economic relations with the east and the south, he's referring to China in the east and most likely Brazil, that is a rising economic powerhouse in South America. With allies like that, Russia certainly has no need to worry about sanctions imposed by the U.S.

And biblical prophecy revealed by the ancient prophet Daniel nearly 2,600 years ago (Daniel 11) warned us of the rise of Russia and China as world powers in the last days preceding the return of Jesus Christ. In fact, Daniel revealed that these two nations would become allies for a time before they become bitter enemies. (Daniel 11:6)

And now, we're seeing Daniel's prophecies being fulfilled. As for the U.S. in world prophecy? Her days are numbered. We'll deal with that in Part II.
